First Viennese Pendulum Clock Factory
[ a work in process ]

The Factory Moved to Ebensee from Vienna in 1871
Ebensee is a stunningly beautiful area along a lake "Traunsee" 2/3 of the way from Vienna to Salzburg, It is south of the autobahn by around 20 Kilometers (13miles)
Click below on the thumbnails if you want to see
what the area around the town "Ebensee" in Austria looks like. (Who
can blame them for wanting to move out to the country when it looks like
this). While visiting Ebensee, I found it more than ironic and a little
sad that I could find no trace, nor any remembrance of there being a clock
factory here by the people I talked to.
Photos taken 4/200
.
Photos taken9/2002
I stayed in the Hotel Post, a very pleasant and moderately priced hotel.

RESCH-GEBRUEDER (brothers) UHRENFABRIK (Clockfactory) Ebensee Austria 16/055
REMEMBER, trademark, under: UHRENFABRIK
(First Vienese Pendulum Clock Factory) Eduard Pfeil, Wien, then later Solomon Abels sales agents last data 01.10.1886.
Founder Lorentz Resch, Jeweller "Court Appointed by the Austrian Emperor" , founded in the year 1862 a modest clock manufacturing enterprise in Wien (Vienna) 1871 moved to Ebensee, (upper Austria) . Shortly before the new factory buildings were finished Resch died. His three sons continued and developed the RESCH enterprise to the leading clock manufacturer in Austria. In the year 1901, the entire plan was sold to Junghans A.G. Schramberg.
The RESCH clock factory became a Junghans/family enterprise. In rememberance of the wedding of a Junghans daughter, the trademark of all wall regulator from the year 1901 : REMEMBRANCE. After World War 1 (1914-1918), Junghans was unable to continue with the clock manufacturing in Ebensee, sold in the year 1921/1922 ? the entire real estate. No records of the serial number system of REMEMBRANCE available.
Note: REMEMBRANCE is different than the REMEMBER that was on the GR clocks prior to 1901.
The Emperor Court Appointed Privileged First Vienna Regulator Factory - Ebensee - Upper Austria.
One of my goals in the project is to locate the last clock without Remember
on it and the first with.
(Estimations) Somewhere between serial number 39633 and 47340, (eg:
40,000)I believe the move to the factory in Ebensee was made. So from 1862 to
1871 around 40,000 clocks were made in Vienna by GR. Over 9 years this
works out into around 4500 per year, a substantial output at the time.
From 1871 to 1901 (30 years) 220,000 clocks were made which averages around 7800
per year.
GR only made weight driven clocks, no spring wound that I've ever heard
of.
GR is the only company that I've ever heard of that put the serial number on the
brass back of the movement, the brass front of the movement, the back
metal part of the bezel, the movement mounting bracket, and the brass top
pendulum rod holder. Interestingly enough after serial number
100,000, they only put the final 4 digits of the s/n on the pendulum rod holder
and bracket and the other places were noted as 100,000 with the
actual number in a nearby place.Their clocks were sold through a Vienna outlet
and widely exported. Kroeber imported many into the US. Cannot confirm this
though... "The factory production reached its peak in 1885, producing from
12,000 to 15,000 clocks per year."
Lenzkirch did a similar numbering method, but it is not difficult to tell a a
Lenzkirch movement from a GR. One key thing would be the single piece
verge on the GR. This typical of all Austrian made clocks.
REGARDING TRADEMARKS
(Under construction, lots more work will be done)
(will have photos of movements and trademarks)
Better Photos will be posted later(someday)
This is a continual work in process
I have owned all the clocks listed
below
So far I've discovered 2 forms of the logo. In all cases
it seems to be underneath the crutch
Over time , the range of numbers that each is on should be narrowed down a bit.
Format 0 - Found on s/n 77-39633 - No Remember Logo (Possibly made in Vienna)
Format 1 - Found on s/n 47540 through 221249+
Format 2 - Found on s/n 236811
The last GR clock movement I have a documented photo of is 270277
The ones I've seen also have the crutch held on by two screws. and the plates held together by screws and a washer. With an exception for the early ones and a mini.
